South Moor Heritage Trail is a 4 mile loop which visits the historical sites of the village and provides some history at each point on the trail. The Goggins Comrades South Moor Heritage Trail run is a social running event exploring the trail. Participants learn more about the local history of the area while having fun. Our event takes place on Remembrance Sunday and should finish in time for participants to attend their local services.
The trail visits a variety of interesting places in the village including South Moor Memorial Park, St Georges Church and the Miners Rescue Station. It also stops off at the former coal depot, various collieries and welfare hospital which have been demolished. In these areas interpretation boards are the only lasting reminder of the industrial heritage of the village. The Heritage Trail also includes markers on some of the colliery terraces to designate where a soldier who died in the First World war lived.
One of the highlights of the trail is the interpretation board stand at the Charley Pit. Made from bricks fired at the colliery brickworks it is a unique structure. There are also great views from the site of the pit across the valley towards Penshaw Monument and the sea.
Our event is named after Lance Corporal Peter Goggins. “Peter was court marshalled for desertion on Christmas Eve 1916. This was in spite of evidence he was following orders given by a retreating sergeant. He was executed by firing squad on 17th January 1917. In 2006 after years of campaigns Peter Goggins received a posthumous pardon from the UK government. He lived his life prior to the outbreak of war as a miner in South Moor.
The event aims to be inclusive with something for every level of fitness. For 2020 we had planned three different runs around South Moor including one of which linked with the Twizell Burn Heritage Trail. Booking details and plans for 2021 should be available in September.
Following the announcement on February 22nd regarding easing restrictions we are hoping to hold the event on November 14th. We will post more details and a contact email closer to the time.
