SUMMARY:Bolts Law Basher 2023
DESCRIPTION:History of the Bolts Law Basher\nThe John Donneky Snr Bolts Law Basher is an annual running event. It is usually held on the first Tuesday of June in the North Pennines starting in Rookhope. Since 2012 a couple of hundred runners have enjoyed an evening on the fells. It is a fun fellrunning taster session to prepare novice fell runners for entering one of the local races later in the Summer. John Donneky senior believed all runners should do part of their training on the fells to prepare themselves for their races even if they were on the roads. John was a committed member of Derwentside A.C. and the club contribute the costs of the event. \nIn 2020 due to the Covid-19 lockdown we had a virtual event. In 2021 & 2022 we enjoyed the fells even more after missing a whole year. \nAbout The Event\nAfter the obligatory photograph in the village everyone jogs up the one mile Rookhope Incline. Runners will be split into groups at the top of the incline. Each group will be looked after by experienced run leaders which hopefully will ensure everyone has a comfortable evening and gets back to the village hall safely. It is suitable for both beginners are the more experienced with a range of group leaders to suit everyone. \nThe whole run is approximately 7.5 miles and includes some heather bashing and two big climbs. After the incline a flat then downhill section takes you to the foot of the climb to Bolts Law the second obstacle on the route.  Weather conditions can be very different on the higher ground and can change quickly. For this reason participants must bring some suitable clothing for poor weather. Even if you don’t think you are going to need them when you leave the house. This You Tube video shows the views from near the top of the incline. \n \nSign Up Now\nA friendly welcome assured. The Bolts Law Basher is a free event but please book in advance and bring something for the post run buffet. To book your place please sign up here.

SUMMARY:Goggins Comrades South Moor Heritage Trail Run
DESCRIPTION:South Moor Heritage Trail is a 4 mile loop which visits the historical sites of the village and provides some history at each point on the trail. The Goggins Comrades South Moor Heritage Trail run is a social running event exploring the trail. Participants learn more about the local history of the area while having fun. Our event takes place on Remembrance Sunday and should finish in time for participants to attend their local services. \nThe trail visits a variety of interesting places in the village including South Moor Memorial Park\, St Georges Church and the Miners Rescue Station. It also stops off at the former coal depot\, various collieries and welfare hospital which have been demolished. In these areas interpretation boards are the only lasting reminder of the industrial heritage of the village. The Heritage Trail also includes markers on some of the colliery terraces to designate where a soldier who died in the First World war lived. \nOne of the highlights of the trail is the interpretation board stand at the Charley Pit.  Made from bricks fired at the colliery brickworks it is a unique structure. There are also great views from the site of the pit across the valley towards Penshaw Monument and the sea. \nWho was Peter Goggins?\nOur event is named after Lance Corporal Peter Goggins. “Peter was court marshalled for desertion on Christmas Eve 1916. This was in spite of evidence he was following orders given by a retreating sergeant. He was executed by firing squad on 17th January 1917. In 2006 after years of campaigns Peter Goggins received a posthumous pardon from the UK government. He lived his life prior to the outbreak of war as a miner in South Moor. \nThe event aims to be inclusive with something for every level of fitness. For 2020 we had planned three different runs around South Moor including one of which linked with the Twizell Burn Heritage Trail.  Booking details and plans for 2021 should be available in September. \nFollowing the announcement on February 22nd regarding easing restrictions we are hoping to hold the event on November 14th. We will post more details and a contact email closer to the time. \nVisit our dedicated page for more events.
